Customer Service. Every client and every project demands a different combination of these skills. In 2007, I established Lab Monkey Design, my freelance design business, to bring this mix of experiences directly to my clients. Frustrated by confining myself to roles which allowed me to design, but not lead—or lead, but not design—I set out to combine these services in the form of my own practice. Lab Monkey Design derives its name from my undergraduate experience among the "lab monkeys"—a self-imposed nickname reflective of our roles in the great experiment of design education. But it was really an ideal world of collaborative design practice and theory, where peers contributed ideas, inspiration, and direction—tapping the best in one another's creative potential. That is exactly what Lab Monkey Design aspires to be—an ever-evolving space for experimentation, collaboration and creativity.
